The last couple of years old school tattoos have been gaining popularity again, up to a point where we can call them trendy. The old school tattoo designs are being adopted by a younger crowd. Sailor tattoos are no longer the sole property of a certain subculture, like they used to be. The old school tattoo was very popular with sailor’s in its prime and where the style came to attention. The vintage tattoo’s crossed the sees and were seen in every place they docked. But the traditional Symbol Tattoos still make hot favorites among tattoo enthusiasts.

  1. The show’s public relations team reached out to Pohl in an email last year because they heard of his reputation as an tattoo artist and seen photos of his work posted online.

Pohl has been sworn to secrecy about the show’s outcome, but said Thursday that viewers will see a variety of tattoo styles and backgrounds — from old school to contemporary.

  2. The middle image is of a Lion tattoo Alyssa Lyen had done by Cam Pohl on her thigh. Pohl is a Lansing tattoo artist. He will be a contestant on a tattoo reality TV show that debuts next month. (Photo: Image courtesy of Alyssa Lyen)

Steve Ouellette, 49, a Battle Creek native, hired Pohl to turn a fading, 25-year-old tattoo of a Native American art-inspired thunderbird on his left arm into an owl and to create a tattoo of a sugar skull — similar to a Mexican Day of the Dead holiday skull — with ivy and roses wrapped around it.

The skull tattoo was one Quellette’s wife, Kris, wanted before she died of a chronic illness last July.

  3. A TATTOO convention is returning for its second year, bigger and better than before.

Totally Inked Tattoo Convention will take over Newport Leisure Centre this Saturday and Sunday, featuring traders, competitions, walk-ups, entertainment and more.

The event is organised by Jonki Silfwerax, who owns Luna Ink in Newport, and has a huge line-up of artists who will be showcasing work and offering walk-up tattoos (plus pre-booked ones) between 10am and 9pm.

Anyone 18+ can get a tattoo, with competitions for fresh tattoos, in coloured or in black and grey, on both days. There will be prizes for first, second and third place, plus best in show.

  4. After seeing the efficiently managed, 28th Santa Rosa Tattoo & Blues, the longest running tattoo convention in California, Scene360 was curious to meet up with co-organizer Daat Kraus who also owns and runs a studio by similar name, “Santa Rosa Tattoo” (originally established in 1978 by Bert Rodriguez). The shop is situated in a renovated Victorian house—its striking old-school charm is present on the outside as well as indoors with vintage furniture pieces, paintings, tattoo memorabilia, and more.

  5. As much as I love back tattoos, they’re kinda hard to admire without the help of a mirror or the skills of a contortionist. Thighs, butt, hip, or rib tattoos? All cute but also all hidden 90 percent of the time by clothes. So to make it easier on yourself (and your Instagram selfies), why not try a wrist tattoo? When you have an idea or a design as good as these, you’re gonna want to stare at your tat every chance you get.

  6. After a decade in the neighborhood, the Castro’s Bulldog Tattoo has moved into a new, larger space at 2275 Market St. (at 16th St.)

With the new space comes a name change: Bulldog Tattoo has rebranded as Trudy’s Tattoo Parlour.

Owner and tattoo artist Gauge Strongarm decided to change the name because “Bulldog sounds super-aggressive.”

“I felt like the name was a turnoff,” Strongarm said, eliciting negative stereotypes about tattoo shops like heavy metal music and big burly bikers. The business is still named for a bulldog — Strongarm’s pet, Trudy — but it aims to be more inviting and welcoming to everybody.
